Visitor Preparation

8 Things Every First-Time Visitor Should Know

Egypt's museums are extraordinary — but they reward preparation. These are the insights that make the difference between a rushed visit and an unforgettable one.

1
Buy only from official ticket sources
Every museum has an official website and on-site ticket office. These are the only legitimate sources. Avoid any intermediary that cannot clearly demonstrate official authorisation.
2
Foreign visitor prices are substantially higher
Egypt operates a dual-pricing system for most heritage sites. Foreign visitors typically pay several times the Egyptian national rate. Budget for this when planning your trip.
3
The GEM is a half-day or full-day destination
With over 100,000 artefacts across 7,000 square metres of display space, the Grand Egyptian Museum cannot be rushed. Plan at least four hours — more if you want to linger in the Tutankhamun galleries.
4
Opening time is the best time to arrive
Most major sites open at 9am. Arriving in the first hour means cooler temperatures, shorter queues, and quieter galleries. Midday crowds at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings can be overwhelming.
5
Valley of the Kings tombs have individual pricing
Your base ticket covers three tombs of your choice. Famous tombs including Tutankhamun's KV62 and Seti I's KV17 require separate supplementary tickets. Decide in advance which ones matter most to you.
6
Carry sufficient cash at all times
Card payment is inconsistent across Egyptian heritage sites. Bring Egyptian Pounds for admission supplements, audio guides, locker rentals, and all food and drink at outdoor sites.
7
Photography policies differ — always check
The Royal Mummies Hall at the Egyptian Museum prohibits photography entirely. Flash is banned at virtually all sites to protect ancient pigments. Confirm the policy on arrival at each venue.
8
Check hours within 48 hours of your visit
Egyptian museums adjust their opening hours for public holidays, Ramadan, and peak tourist season with little advance notice. Always confirm current hours on the official website shortly before your visit day.
